A spacebar speed test with four timers
This spacebar counter measures how many times you can press the space bar in 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds. The timer waits for your first press, so you can get your hands ready first. At the end you see your presses per second, the total count and a rough rating, and your best score for each timer is saved.
The big key on the screen moves down every time you press, and the count above it goes up, so you can see that every press has been picked up. The live number in the corner shows how many presses you made in the last second.
Endless counter mode
Sometimes you just want to count. In Endless mode there is no timer: every press of the Space bar adds one, and the Reset button sets it back to zero. Your highest count is kept as your best. It is handy for counting anything by hand, or for testing whether a space bar registers every press.
Why holding the key does not count
When you hold down a key, your computer sends the same key again and again after a short pause. That is called key repeat, and it is how holding a letter fills a line with it. A counter that took those repeats would let anyone score high by simply holding the key, so this one ignores them. Only a real press, with the key coming back up before the next one, adds to your score.
What is a good spacebar score?
Nobody keeps an official table of spacebar speeds, so here is an honest rough guide, based on how fast a person can usually tap one finger:
- Under 4 per second: warming up. Normal for a first try or a long round.
- 4 to 6: steady. Where many people land.
- 6 to 8: fast.
- 8 to 10: very fast. Hard to keep up for more than a few seconds.
- Over 10: exceptional, usually with two fingers taking turns.
Longer rounds pull everyone down. Your arm and hand get tired, so a 60 second score is often clearly lower than a 5 second one. That is why each timer keeps its own best.
How to press the space bar faster
Rest your wrist and keep the hand relaxed; a tight arm feels fast but slows down after a few seconds. Make each press short and light, letting the key bounce back on its own. Try a couple of styles: your usual thumb, the side of the thumb, or two fingers tapping in turn. Do a warm-up round first, since the second or third try is usually the best one.
Spacebar counter on a phone
There is no keyboard on a phone, so the game shows a large spacebar to tap instead. Every tap counts, and holding your finger down still counts as one tap. Phone scores are not the same as keyboard scores, so compare them with each other, not with keyboard results.
More quick tests
If you enjoyed this, try the CPS test for mouse clicks per second, or the double click test to check whether your mouse clicks twice by itself. The reaction time test measures how fast you respond to a signal, and the typing test shows your words per minute.
How to play Spacebar Counter
- Pick a time (5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds) or Endless, then press Play.
- The timer starts with your first press of the Space bar.
- Every separate press counts. Holding the key down does not, because the automatic key repeat is ignored.
- When the time runs out you get your presses per second, your total and a rough rating.
- On a phone or tablet, tap the big on-screen spacebar instead of a keyboard.
Spacebar Counter tips
Use your strongest thumb
Most people are fastest with the thumb they normally use for the space bar. Some get a better score with two fingers of one hand tapping in turn on the same key.
Short, light taps
Lift the finger just enough for the key to come back up. Pressing it all the way down hard and lifting high wastes time on every press.
Pace the long rounds
In 30 and 60 second rounds, starting flat out usually means a slow finish. A steady rhythm you can hold gives a better average.
Same keyboard, same chair
Keyboards feel very different. To compare scores fairly, use the same keyboard and the same position each time.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good spacebar speed?
There is no official chart, so treat these as rough numbers based on how fast people can usually tap a finger. Over a short round of 5 to 10 seconds, around 5 to 7 presses per second is common, 8 or more is fast, and staying above 10 is rare. Over 60 seconds most people slow down, so a lower score there is normal.
Does holding the space bar count?
No. When you hold a key, your computer repeats it automatically. This counter ignores those repeats, so only real separate presses count.
Can I use the spacebar counter on a phone?
Yes. Phones and tablets show a big spacebar on the screen, and every tap on it counts. Tapping a screen and pressing a real key feel different, so compare touch scores with touch scores.
Is this the same as a spacebar clicker?
Yes. Spacebar clicker, spacebar counter and spacebar speed test usually mean the same thing, counting how many times you can press the space bar in a set time.
Why does the page not scroll when I press Space?
While the game is on your screen, the Space bar belongs to the counter, so the page stays put. Scroll with the mouse, or scroll the game out of view, and Space works as normal again.
Is my best score saved?
Yes, your best for each time and your highest endless count are saved in this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere.
