Daily Mahjong: one board a day

Daily Mahjong gives you one mahjong solitaire puzzle each day: the classic 144-tile turtle layout, dealt the same way for every player. Come back tomorrow and there is a fresh board waiting. It is a small daily habit, like a crossword or a sudoku with your morning coffee, and a fun way to compare times with friends and family.

The rules are the rules of classic Mahjong Solitaire. Match pairs of identical free tiles until the table is clear. A tile is free when nothing lies on top of it and its left or right side is open.

How the daily board works

Every day at midnight UTC a new deal is chosen from the date. Because the deal depends only on the date, everyone who opens the page on the same day gets exactly the same board. That makes it fair to compare: if your friend cleared today’s board in six minutes, you are playing the very same tiles. One detail: small phones open the 72-tile compact version of the daily deal, because 144 tiles would be too small to tap on a narrow screen. Pick the classic board on the start card if you want to race a friend who plays on a computer.

Every daily board can be cleared. Like all our mahjong games, the deal is built from a real winning order, so there is always a path to an empty table. If you get stuck, Shuffle re-deals the tiles you have left in a way that can still be cleared, though a race for time is more satisfying without it.

How to play

  1. Look first. The timer starts with your first match, not when the page opens. Spend a moment finding the free tiles and the pairs that open the most.
  2. Tap two identical free tiles to remove them. Flowers match flowers and seasons match seasons.
  3. Use the tools when needed: Hint shows an open pair, Undo takes back a match, and Shuffle re-deals the remaining tiles.
  4. Try again. New game restarts today’s board, so a second attempt can use what you learned the first time.

Tips for a fast time

Open the top early. The single tile at the peak of the turtle, and the layers under it, block a large part of the board. Clearing them early gives you many free tiles at once.

Clear the long rows from the ends. The long rows at the top and bottom are only free at their ends. Work inwards and they open quickly.

Don’t grab every easy pair. When three copies of a tile are free, choose the pair that frees the most tiles and keep the third copy for later. That habit saves time you would otherwise lose to shuffles.

How to play Daily Mahjong

  1. A new board is dealt every day at midnight (UTC). Everyone plays the same deal that day.
  2. Remove the tiles in matching pairs. A tile is free when nothing lies on it and its left or right side is open.
  3. Identical tiles match. Any two flowers match, and any two seasons match.
  4. New game restarts today's board, so you can try again for a faster time.

Daily Mahjong tips

Scout before you start

The clock only starts with your first match. Take a moment to look at the board and find the key tiles first.

Replay for time

Because the deal stays the same all day, a second attempt lets you use what you learned to clear it faster.

Compare with friends

Everyone gets the same board, so send the page to a friend and compare your times.

Frequently asked questions

When does the daily mahjong board change?

A new deal starts every day at midnight UTC. Until then, the page always shows the same board.

Is the daily board the same for everyone?

Yes, for the same board size. The deal is chosen from the date, so every player gets the same tiles in the same places that day. Computers and tablets start on the classic 144-tile board; small phones start on the 72-tile compact board so the tiles stay big enough to tap, and you can switch boards on the start card.

Can I play older daily boards?

Not yet. For unlimited random deals, play the classic Mahjong Solitaire page, where every New game is a fresh board.
