What makes a hangman word hard?

Most people think long words are the hardest in hangman. The opposite is usually true. A long word has many letters to find, so almost every common guess hits something, and the pattern of blanks quickly gives the word away. Short words with unusual letters are the real killers.

A hard hangman word usually has three things:

  1. Rare letters. J, Q, X, Z, K, V and W are guessed late, so every one of them costs the guesser a miss or two.
  2. Few common vowels. Players start with E, A, O and I. A word like RHYTHM has none of them.
  3. Many possible matches. If the pattern _ A Z E could be MAZE, DAZE, GAZE, HAZE or LAZE, the guesser has to gamble.

Hangman rules in brief

One player thinks of a secret word and draws a row of blanks, one per letter. The other player guesses letters one at a time. A right guess fills in every matching blank; a wrong guess adds one part to the hangman drawing. Most games allow six wrong guesses: head, body, two arms and two legs. The guesser wins by completing the word before the drawing is finished; the word-setter wins if the drawing is completed first. Our online version follows these classic rules, with the drawing replaced by a friendlier figure.

How to choose your own hard words

You do not need a list to stump your friends. Build your own hard words with three simple checks:

  • Can you swap one letter and get another real word? If yes (like JOKE, POKE, WOKE), the guesser has to gamble on the last letter.
  • Does it avoid E, A and S? Those are among the first letters most people try.
  • Is it short? Four to six letters gives the fewest clues for the most guesses.

A good party trick is to pick a word the whole group knows but rarely spells, like KAYAK or WALTZ.

How to guess better

If you are the guesser, a little strategy goes a long way:

  • Open with vowels. E is the most common letter in English, followed by A, O and I.
  • Then common consonants. R, S, T, N and L appear in a large share of words.
  • Use the length. If E and A have both missed after three guesses, switch to O, I, U and Y; words like LYNX and HYMN live there.
  • Think in chunks. Once a few letters are in place, try common pairs like TH, SH, CH, ING and ER.
  • Keep rare letters for last. Guess J, Q, X or Z only when the pattern really suggests them.
